Nigh on 55
by Holly Snyder-Samson
11” x 14” / Framed Charcoal on Paper
“While working on a portrait of my 85-year-old mother, I was struck by how much of her I see in myself. It was both gratifying and terrifying. Although the passage of time is never easy to accept, the profound gift of aging should be celebrated. I have always been inspired by old photographs, particularly of family. So, while difficult, I was emboldened to create a self-portrait, hoping that my girls will cherish these interpretive mementos when Grandma isn't a text away anymore.”

Statement
Consider how easily we can identify a friend in a crowd - humans are instinctively drawn to the face. A person's unique distinguishing facial features, along with their character traits, talents and skills is how they are both recognized and perceived. I strive to use interesting marks in my portraits to create a compelling picture, celebrating the individual and the marks they make on their world.
Bio
Holly Snyder-Samson graduated with a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1995, working in various programming and engineering jobs for a time. However, her first love was always photography, specifically portraiture, and she longed to do something more visually creative. While raising her girls in Safety Harbor, Florida, she occasionally dabbled in charcoal and oil paint, creating both portraits and figurative pieces. She has since been raising the bar for herself, constantly observing and learning from the many master fine artists online. Most recently her work received an honorable mention from the Evolution exhibition at the Herrig Center for the Arts.
