Fortune or Fame

20" x 24" / oil on masonite

Fortune or Fame is a portrait of a good friend who was at a cross roads in his young life. He was making the decision to either stay in a comfortable environment or choose the more difficult, uncertain path to follow his heart and his calling.

I create colorful contemporary still-life and figurative paintings that represent trains of thought, or streams of consciousness, rather than zeroing in on a precise, singular message. A bright palette and realistic style set the tone for humorous tongue-in-cheek games of connect-the-dots and hide-and-seek. Using figures, food, toys and elements of popular culture, I excavate secret cultural codes buried in language and experience. A sucker for imperfections, detail and bad puns, I have a nice collection of plays on words and “household debris” just waiting for the right connections. I enjoy the challenges and rewards of realism in creating effective narrative images that are recognizable and relatable yet open to interpretation, even after the punchline.”
