“Free to be” is the last painting in Barbara Hack’s Unveiling Series that explores explores how women navigate and respond to shifts in their societal environment. The series portrays different stages of this journey, reflecting both internal struggles and external influences.
Free to be has the women in full color and the veil has fallen to the floor. No longer masked of uncertainty and trust . She presents to the world feeling content with her decision to face her journey … Free to be.
All the paintings are purposefully varied in size to represent Each stage of woman’s journey . Those individual periods of change also carry different size challenges and emotional weight.

A Veiled Threat - depicts a woman enshrouded in netting that represents pressure and control. Masked by a veil of uncertainty and trust, she hides her true self and emotions from the world, rendered almost colorless. Forced to hide her identity and feelings from the world .. she is depicted nearly void of color.
Enshroud - her journey begins as she starts to awaken and harness her inner strength. The introduction of color signifies her growing self-awareness.
Defiance - this painting captures the determination she feels to move forward. Though still veiled, she is slowly and steadily Uncovering her potential.
Hesitation follows, illustrating the common doubts and second-guessing that accompany the pursuit of change. The veil of doubt clings tightly, symbolizing her internal struggle.
Renewal shows the woman emerging from uncertainty. With eyes full of determination and clarity, she has unveiled her destiny and embraced her decisions .
