(W)hole
by Rebecca J. Jones
Graphite Pencil, Pastel / 28.75" x 24.75"
"(W)hole" speaks to breaking the cycle of self-sabotage. We tend to self-sabotage/create holes when we don't feel worthy. This is the defining moment when we decide to stop hiding who we are, knowing our truths will continue to surface despite all our efforts to conceal them. I chose to depict a moth not only because they eat sweaters, but moths have a lot of symbolic references. They're symbols of bad omens or temptation. However, they also represent intuition, hidden knowledge, and transformation.
My art is more about a relationship than just something pretty. It's a bond between you and it. A conversation. My art tells stories. Stories about inclusivity, empathy, and sharing positive moments. We have all had struggles in some form or fashion, or we have been debilitated by hate and/or fear. While my art spans a range of emotions (silly and fun, deeper or darker), my goal remains the same for all of them: to be approachable and bring people closer together. Let’s find common ground in emotions. Let’s find grace and understanding. Look beyond the surface, be curious, and ask questions. I want to fight fear and bring to light the things that make us individually beautiful. My art is here for a conversation. How does it make you feel and why? That answer will be different for each person, and it may even be different every time you view it. I can tell you why I made a piece and what my thoughts are, but your connection to it may be different than mine… and I love that!”
